Previs Supervisor: Planning and Executing the Previsualization Process for Animated Productions

A Previs Supervisor is responsible for planning and executing the previsualization process for animated productions. Previsualization, or "previs" for short, is the process of creating a rough animation of a scene or sequence, using low-resolution models and simple animations to plan out the camera movement, staging, and timing. Here are some key steps involved in previs supervision:

  1. Concept Development: The creative team works to develop the overall concept for the animated production, including the story, characters, and visual style.
  2. Previs Planning: The previs supervisor works with the animation director and other key stakeholders to plan out the previs process, including which scenes or sequences will be prevised and how they will be executed.
  3. Previs Creation: The previs team creates the rough animation, using low-resolution models and simple animations to plan out the camera movement, staging, and timing.
  4. Review and Revision: The previs is reviewed by the animation director and other key stakeholders, with feedback given to the previs team to make revisions and adjustments.
  5. Integration: The final previs is integrated into the production, serving as a critical component in the overall planning and production process.

Previs supervision requires a strong understanding of animation production processes, storytelling, and visual communication, as well as technical proficiency in previs software such as Autodesk Maya or Houdini. Careers in previs supervision can range from entry-level roles such as previs artist to more senior positions such as lead previs supervisor or previs director.
